Alabama Grade Level Standards: 6th Grade

Describing the changing role of women in United States’ society and how it affected the family unit.

Identifying the impact of media, including newspapers, AM and FM radio, television, twenty-four-hour sports and news programming, talk radio, and Internet social networking, on United States’ culture since World War II.

Identify technology used during World War II.

Specific Lesson Objective:

6th grade students will be able to create an iMovie describing the important roles of women throughout WW2.  Students will be able to present and explain how WW2 had a huge impact on the media from newspaper, radio, and the internet.  Students will be able to describe how US military technology during WW2 has changed from the start to the end of the war.

Time:  1 week to complete lesson/iMovie will be 2-3 minutes

Computers/iPads

History Book

YouTube- Music, Videos, Pictures

History Channel

Paper/Pencils

Technology:

I will create an iMovie and present it to the class on the topic WW2; this will not only give the students a better understanding, but a visual to go by so they know exactly what I want on the topic. Students will use computers or iPads to research and create their iMovie.

Related Skills:

Student will have already discussed the chapter WW2, this will be less of a reteach and refresh on what they have already learned in the class.  They will use prior knowledge as well as research on the topic.

Lesson Procedures:

Students will pick from the topics of WW2 and create an iMovie which is also known as a movie trailer.  I will have already made an iMovie on the topic "WW2" and present it to the class.  Students should take notes and follow along so they will understand exactly what to do. Students will then are put into groups and pick a topic in which they will complete the iMovie.  Students will research the topic using history book, internet, or library books in order to get all the information needed for the project.  Students will be allowed 4 days of research and on the 5th day we will present them in the class.  Students will research their topic and explain to the class through an iMovie the importance of their topic during and even after WW2.  Students will need at least one picture per text, it will need music in the background, and for bonus points students can add 1 video on the topic.  The iMovie should be 2-3 minutes long and very creative.

Motivation/Schema/Prior Knowledge/Background Building:

Students will already know the understanding of WW2.  I will introduce this lesson by designing an iMovie myself on WW2 and show it to the class so they can get that visual aide and better understanding of the lesson.  I will give students prior topics that we talked about throughout the chapter.  I will walk around and assist the students and direct them on how to create an iMovie.  I will have our Media Specialist come into class and go over on how to create and build an iMovie. 

Academic Language:

The Academic Language in which the students will be implementing during this lesson will be history, social studies, geography, language, and math. 

Differentiation to Meet the Needs of all Students:

I will accommodate all students’ needs in my class such as; Special Ed will have visual aids and I will allow them to watch my iMovie over and over to get a better grasp on the topic and the required time of their iMovie will be cut in half.  Gifted students will be given in depth instruction on pre and post WW2.  ELL students will be able to watch the video in their native language as well as be given instructions.

Explicit Instruction:

Day 1- Students will be presented an iMovie rundown from our media specialists

Day 1- I will then present the iMovie I created.

Day 1- Students will then be paired into groups.

Day 1- I will then hand out the topic on WW2 they will be presenting.

Day 2- Day4 - They will work together by researching the topic gathering information, pictures, videos, and music from the time period. Students will be given 4 days to gather information.

Day 1- Day 4- I will walk around and do one on one with students who are struggling.

Day 4- At the end of the day students will have all information and ready to present the iMovie

Day 5 - Students will present the iMovie on my TV.

Twirl/V:

Talk- We will discuss each iMovie at the end of each presentation as a class.

Write- Students will have to turn in a 1-page report on their topic.

Investigate- Students will be involved in discussion on each topic.

Read- Students will have to read and research the text book as well as the internet.

Listen- Students will listen to everyone’s presentation.

View- Students will watch all the videos being presented.

Reflection:

1. Explain how the planning process for this particular lesson will contribute to the lesson’s overall success.

I feel like the planning process of this lesson of prior knowledge as well as researching the criteria will benefit the student by challenging their critical thinking skills in order to comprehend the task at hand.

2. Reflect on your next steps for growth as a teacher. What will you go forward with from this lesson? What will you do next?

I enjoy technology and hope to be able to continue these types of lessons in the future because it really engages the student from a different aspect, rather than teaching them straight out of the book.  Students tend to really have fun and be creative when they are allowed ownership of their lesson and being able to put a finished product really gives them success as a student physically and emotionally.
